Good help is hard to find. My book is coming together quite well. I have two people working on two different covers for me. The plan is to release the book with 2 separate covers. The person/company who I hired first has known since May about the idea of what I wanted for the cover. Since then, said person/company has missed 3 deadlines to show me drafts, rough drafts at that.
The second person/freelancer has known for about 6 weeks. This person/freelancer has messaged me at least once a week about the artwork they have been hired to do. They are working hard and keeping deadlines.
Back to the first person/company. Why did I hire them? They are trying to start a graphic arts business. They are a friend of a friend. Their family have had a few bumps in the road and it’s said person’s fault. But me being me, I wanted to help. But instead of just handing over a few crisp new Benjamin’s, I figured I could get some cover art work and all would be fine. Well, no that didn’t work out. Said person pawned the laptop that my “cover” was on. After getting the laptop back, started playing video games on the laptop and who knows what else. The laptop later crashed. O was told that he needed to get the software from his cousin and put the software on his wife’s computer to get my “cover” and then finish the work. That was 2 weeks ago. He then went to the library to work on the artwork.
I plan on firing said person/company. If you are going to start a business, please do not do it (in the word of football coaches) half-ass. If you get fired from your first real paying gig, what are you going to do when future gigs come your way. This is sad. If you have an at-home business, work the business. If you have a computer/laptop/tablet for your business, only use it for business. Don’t even play solitaire on it. Work and work only. Now, I have to find someone who can make me a second cover because I was trying to be goodhearted and help a startup company that doesn’t even have a name. I plan on selling many copies of my upcoming book, and this would have been great advertising for said person/company.
